The hexalope

This is for 's contest. They had a 'lets make a species' contest where we voted on random body parts, then had to make a creature out of said body parts. This is mine. You can see the contest rules here:

This was meant to be set up like some biologist's research notes with my won writing....but my writing is the worst on earth, so it's been typed instead so you can read it.

The name 'hexalope' was suggested by my lover <3

Any way, here is the creature biology.

The Hexalope (Latin meaning 'barbed beast') is a bizarre creature. Its body form is similar to that of an Ungulate (hoofed mammal) about 3 - 4 feet at the shoulders with a Leech/Lamprey like head. It has a forked tongue that helps it detect the variety of food if can eat since it is omnivorous. The mouth can graze on plant matter, meat or carrion. Like a lamprey it can suck on body fluids, but also plant sap and fruit juices. They can also stalk and capture smaller prey.

It has 4 dark eyes with no visible Pupil or iris and are Metallic In colour. It is not known how they see the world yet. The head has very large bat-like ears and long whiskers for extra senses to detect predators and food. The ears are also sued to keep in contact with clan members and keep watch for intruders.

It has six legs with Reptilian-like feet with microscopic gripping hooks. It's similar to a Gecko, and they can therefore scale near impossible surfaces, primarily cliff faces and sheer mountains. They can jump very high and far.

The body is covered in fur and its colours vary from 'burnt clay’ colour to a sandy brown. Colours act as camouflage, but the 'eye spots' act as defence. It has quills growing out the shoulders and back. Quills on its back stop predators trying to pounce on the unsuspecting creature. It has a singular Barbed Tail. They can kick or flick their tails which fire the barbs on to their assailant. We’re unsure I the barbs are venomous but they are certainly painful.

They live in nomadic clans in deciduous forests, of two to five individuals. Usually close family members. The females give Birth to live young and have a strong bond with their offspring, parents watch after young for many years even after they've matured. But they are only very social to their small group, and dislike all they get aggressive to outsider packs.

They are as Smart as a wolves, with the same social structures, however less predatory, But they can use stealth to capture very small prey, which they stomp and claw to death. They are nomadic and travel constantly and are mainly crepuscular (active at dawn and dusk), sleeping during the day and travelling at night.
They supposedly can live 20-30 years in good health or captivity. In the wild it can be half that.
