Description

This is another word on the 100 words scifer gave me. This one was 'Cancer'.

Now what else would pop into my head other then the lab rats we often infect with cancer?

I will say that yeah, I'm against animal testing, but no- I'm not the uneducated and impulsive, animal right militants you may think I am about the whole thing. I quote 2 the ranting gryphon's:
"I can't stand it when people think that if I'm not a member of one particular group of morons, then logically I MUST be a member of the opposite group of morons."

I dislike animal testing, and with good reason. Every time I say that though, people jump to the conclusion I'm uneducated in what science does.
Wrong. You're oh so very wrong.

I did seriously follow the life of a biologist for a long while and got through my biological sciences in college and I still study it. I also did a documentary on the subject. And I feel it is something we need to learn to move on from. Animal testing can teach us a lot about the biological world, but it's also has an equal amount of problems. We have a lot in common with a rat while having very little. I think medical testing needs to move more to people if we wish to learn more about people.

And when it comes to cosmetic testing? that needs to be out of the window entirely. Only people use cosmetics, so people shoudl be tested. Medical science can benefit animals. Sometimes.

But saying that, so long as we treat the animals well, I'm ok with it. I've actually seen footage of a laboratory that uses beagle puppies for testing, and they show the amount of care, love and attention they give to them. however, you can never give truly solid results unless the animals are in a 'controlled' environment, and that can include interaction. So the animals never can live a truly care-fee life.

Needless to say I still don't sit too comfortably with animal testing. the benefits can be ground breaking, but the animal suffering shoudl be something we work towards avoiding entirely if we really want science to have the clean morals we want it to have.
